Canberra based Pheno (pronounced fee-no) is electric guitarist and vocalist Jess Green’s pseudonym. As Pheno, she is pioneering her own style of Art- Pop, influenced by artists such as Tune-Yards and St Vincent with a huge nod to 80’s heroes David Bowie and Talking Heads. Pheno’s music layers shimmering vocals, scorching electric guitars, synthesizers, and a mix of acoustic and sampled drums. Lyrical material ranges from Sci-Fi musings in utero (There Are Voices Out There') to ethereal callings from the deep ('Shadow in The Water').
Pheno released her debut EP “Dragon Year” in May 2017 at Sydney’s Lead belly, as part of VIVID festival. Funded by a successful Pozible campaign in 2016, the EP’s production is lush and detailed, recorded and mixed by David Trumpmanis (Sarah Blasko/Flume) and features a dream team of collaborators, including creative producer & drummer Bree van Reyk (Holly Throsby/Paul Kelly/Sally Seltman/Toby Martin) and synths / vocalist Alyx Dennison (Kyu & Richard in Your Mind) as well as other special guests. Songs feature Green's own jazz influenced 'weirdo rock' lead guitar. In 2016 Jess (as Pheno) won a CAPO award (Canberra Arts Patrons) which also helped contribute the producing of the EP.
In 2016 Jess was awarded an Australia Council grant for Pheno, through the Contemporary Music Touring Program. The live band (featuring Dennison and Bonnie Stewart on drums) has toured through eastern NSW including a headline concert at Candelo Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse, Eumundi and The Street Theatre, Canberra. The final leg of the tour is October 17th at the Yarra Hotel in Melbourne with Phia, and Wangaratta October 18th.
Pheno also tours as a solo act using loops, electric guitar, synths and a drum machine, and has performed at Mojo’s Perth, ANU Bar (finale), Tedx Canberra, Transit Bar (Canberra), Ziggy’s (SYD), The Flamin’ Galah (Brisbane) and The Newsagency (SYD) and The Wesley Anne (Melb).
Most recently Pheno toured solo as part of “Winter Pop Up Tour” a cross city collaboration with Georgia Fields (Melb) Merpire (Melb) and Matilda Abraham (Syd) all four artists collaborated musically and staged a tour through Sydney Canberra and Melbourne.
Jess in her freelance life works extensively as a freelance guitarist and singer and has toured nationally and through Europe and Asia, a most recent highlight was in April 2018 when she was part of an all-female cast led by Katie Noonan, for the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony.
Jess is also a highly respected music educator and as Pheno has worked at The Young Music Society Summer Camp, Candelo Festival and Eumundi School of Rock and Girls Rock Canberra presenting workshops to young people. Pheno’s recently supported triple J feature artist Odette at the Transit Bar, Canberra August 25th, and upcoming shows include a co-headline with Melbourne artist Phia, at the Yarra Hotel, Melbourne Oct 17th
"Pheno gives Australia the art-pop injection it deserves on her debut EP Dragon Year"
Isabella Moore, Happy Mag 2017
“Pheno (a.k.a. Jess Green) skillfully evades categorisation on her debut EP, showing off a depth of songwriting and expression that begs to be explored further”
Hayden Fritzlaff BMA Magazine 2017
“Dragon Year has been described as “art pop” and it really is, according to the most literal evocations of those words. Paint splattering passionately onto a canvas; shapes, and then images, coming BANG into existence. It’s an extraordinary 22 minutes of song craft, achieving in an EP format what many albums desperately grapple for.”
